The CMI Catchment Area Tool allows you to determine the catchment area for a particular location: what are the addresses and zip codes within, say, a 5-minute walk of your location.
Example: A large retailer wants to open a new store in Amsterdam. Option 1 is in the Bijlmer, option 2 is in the Wibautstraat and option 3 is in Banne Buiksloot in North. The company wants to know what the market potential is for those three locations. The CMI Catchment Area Tool can be used for this: you use this to determine the postal codes that are within 5 minutes walking distance, cycling distance and driving distance of three locations. With that info, you can find out how many people live in those zip codes; how many of them are families; how many are men, women; how many children, etc. Based on that, you can make a recommendation. In which area do you have the largest reach, and what type of people do you reach there in general that in turn affects the type of product you want to offer in that location. In the north live many families, immigrants; in the southeast very mixed, a somewhat lower income level, there you want to offer more cheaper products, household products for young families, etc.

Example: If you want to investigate efficiency of a company’s supply chain, you can use this tool to determine the driving distance between different distribution centers and stores. The CMI Crow Flight Distance tool lets you calculate the shortest distance between two points (on a map, regardless of the vagaries of the intervening terrain). “Crow Flight” stands for “as the crow flies” or “in a straight line”.

With the CMI Language Detection Tool you can determine the language of a large number of texts within seconds. This is useful, for example, if you want to do a sentiment analysis of social media messages with SentiStrenght. For a good sentiment analysis all messages should be in the same language (e.g. in Dutch the term “rare” has a negative connotation, while in English it is a neutral word). The CMI Language Detection Tool can detect the major world languages. The tool displays the two most common languages in a message. This is useful in situations when a message or text contains multiple languages, which certainly happens regularly in Dutch (e.g. “Oh my God, the weekend went so fast!”). All FBE students and employees can use this software for free. Qualtrics can be used to build and administer both simple and complex questionnaires. There are various options regarding the structure and type of questions. The results are clearly displayed and can easily be exported to Excel or SPSS. Qualtrics has a modern and clear (English) user environment, which makes working with Qualtrics very intuitive and easy. Qualtrics is suitable for surveys in all languages. MAXQDA is a very suitable program for analyzing qualitative data such as text (interview transcripts and other documents). With it, it is possible to enter text and use it to generate glossaries, categorize and code pieces of text, and perform analyses.
